A Keyway Gauge is a specialized precision measuring tool used to inspect the width and, in some cases, the depth of keyways and slots in mechanical components such as shafts, hubs, and bores. It ensures that the keyway dimensions are within specified tolerances, guaranteeing a proper fit for the key and a secure connection between parts.
Design and Types
Keyway gauges typically come in two main forms:
Keyway Width Gauges(Go/No-Go Gauges):
These resemble a double-ended fork or a feeler gauge set.
The"Go"end(usually marked green)should easily slide into the keyway along its entire length. This verifies that the minimum width(and sometimes the depth)is not too tight.
The"No-Go"end(usually marked red)should not fit into the keyway. This verifies that the maximum width is not too loose.
If the Go end fits and the No-Go end does not,the keyway is within tolerance.
Keyway Depth Gauges:
These are used specifically to measure the depth of a keyway from the outer diameter of a shaft or bore.
They often have a base that rests on the component's OD and a protruding finger or pin that contacts the bottom of the keyway. The depth is then read on a dial indicator or a digital display.
Key Features and Benefits
Speed and Efficiency:Allows for quick inspection on the production line without complex setup.
Ease of Use:Requires minimal training;the Go/No-Go result is unambiguous.
High Accuracy and Reliability:Manufactured to very precise standards to ensure consistent measurements.
Durability:Made from hardened tool steel or carbide to resist wear from repeated use.
